Klaipėda

Kaipėda, the third-largest city in Lithuania, is a window to the world of international trade for the country – its port is ice-free nearly all year round. Ravaged in World War II when it was used by Germans as a submarine base, much of Klaipėda including Old Town had to be rebuilt. However, the main draw for tourists is the city’s location – it sits at the mouth of the Danes river and on the Curonian Lagoon.

1252. Teutonic Knights built the castle of Memelburg at the mouth of the Dane River. Memelburg gave birth to Klaipeda City. Klaipeda became the centre of Kuršas diocese.
